How to Catch Up With Project Requirements Changes

ConfusedManThe continuous change of project requirements is generally a common problem a quality assurance tester faces during his work.

Here are some useful tips on how quality assurance testers should handle such situations to reduce the associated risks:

  • Cooperate early on with project stakeholders to understand how their requirements might change, and work out some alternate test plans or strategies in advance, if it’s possible.
  • It’s better for your app initial design to allow for adaptability in order to ensure later changes will require no redoing from scratch.
  • Developers will be more comfortable with changes if the code is properly commented and documented.
  • To make customers feel confident in their requirements and to reduce changes, use rapid prototyping when possible.
  • The initial project schedule is recommended to allow for extra time for possible changes.
  • Using the initial ‘Phase 1’ version’s requirements, try to transfer new requirements to the app’s ‘Phase 2’ version.
  • Make sure customers and every project stakeholder realize all their significant requirements changes influence the schedule and cause potential risks and additional costs.
  • Balance your effort put in setting up the automated testing with your expected effort needed to redo it for handling changes.
  • Design sufficient flexibility in automated test scripts. Try to focus the initial automated tests on the app’s aspects most likely to stay unchanged.
  • Take appropriate effort for changes risk analysis to reduce regression testing needs.
  • Test cases also must be designed with some flexibility.  It’s not that easy to do, but the best will be to minimize test cases’ detail, or set up higher-level test plans of generic type only.
  • Despite the added risk it entails, try to do ad hoc testing more and focus on detailed test plans less.

If you follow these tips, big chances are your testing stage won’t suffer much from frequent changes of requirements.
